A Letter I Received Yesterday

Yesterday, I received the following letter in the mail:

Dear Ms. Esposito:

There is nothing that we – the Korean War Veterans, Rockland Chapter – can say or do to alleviate the pain and suffering that you have gone through over the sudden death of your Husband, Phillip in Iraq. As we said in Korea, he went to fight for a people he hardly knew and a land he never saw. God has a special place in Heaven for men like Captain Esposito who fought to defend the rights of others. All of us knew that when we went to Korea.

The Korean War Veterans, Rockland Chapter ask that you accept this contribution in your husband's honor for your needs.

They also serve who only stand and wait. (John Milton: On His Blindness).

Enclosed was a financial gift that expressed that the letter above was not mere words, but a deeply held sentiment made real by action.

In a time of hardship and despair, I have received many such statements and gifts. I am deeply thankful for them all. They cannot assuage all of my and my daughter's grief, but they nevertheless serve to remind us that we are not alone.

My heart goes out to you and your family. My husband Thorton went to school with you and Phil. I never knew him but from everything Thorton has told me he sounds like he was a wonderful man.

I was so pissed when I heard the verdict. Justice was not served but I hope with all my heart you can all find peace someday.

If there is anything you ever need please do not hestitate to ask my husband or myself. If you are ever setting up fundraisers for Phil's wife and daughter I would be more than happy to help out and do something out here in Wisconsin. I could do a brat fry, anything to help.

I wish you and your family a blessed and safe holiday.

Jill

As Phillip's wife, I deeply appreciate your support.

My husband Thorton started a group on Facebook in Phil's memory. As of right now (11:30 am Tuesday morning December 9) we have 116 members. We started the group yesterday afternoon.

Hello Siobhan,

It's been quite some time since we were in homeroom together back in high school, but I wanted to express my deepest condolences to you and your daughter. I have been following everything in the news and did not realize you had this blog until I saw it on your husband's Facebook memorial page. I hope you know that people have been praying for you without you even knowing it. No words I can offer can make your situation better, but try to keep your head up and remember that people are thinking about you and are inspired by your strength. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know ...

Sincerely,
Julie

Julie,

Thank you for your words of encouragement. You lifted my spirit. Although our families seem to encounter disappointment at every turn, knowing that people do care and are willing to help gives us strength.
